$174,000 Cannot Be Carried in Silence: A Reminder from Brest Customs

Published:

Brest Customs has initiated criminal proceedings against two Ukrainian citizens for the illegal movement of a large sum of money across the border.

The driver and a female passenger of a RENAULT passenger car were traveling from Poland through the “Brest” checkpoint. To cross the border, they chose the Red Channel, where the driver submitted a declaration for the temporary import of the vehicle and a dog.

However, during an inspection, Brest customs officers discovered that each citizen had hidden $87,000 (in equivalent) within their personal belongings. The money was carefully concealed, indicating a deliberate attempt to hide the funds from authorities.

Criminal cases have been opened under Part 2 of Article 228 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus. The sanctions for this article include a fine, or restriction of liberty for a term of two to five years, or imprisonment for the same term.

The Customs Committee reminded:

🔹when moving across the customs border more than 10 thousand US dollars in equivalent, it is necessary to fill out a passenger declaration.

🔹Illegal movement of more than 30 thousand dollars in equivalent already entails criminal liability.
